Towards green optical networks

Aurora Networks just released an article at Lightwave about five steps towards green optical networks.

Their action points to reduce network consumption and go green are:

  • Elimination of RF actives
  • Cut in OPEX
  • Reduction in the number of homes served per node
  • Future-proof technology
  • Element management system

By applying those policies they claim to have achieved:

  • Annual energy cost savings of more than 75 percent for a serving area
  • More than 70 percent reduction in plant actives
  • More than 65 percent reduction in maintenance and operations costs

They are a cable equipment manufacturer so I would say that they are trying to sell DOCSIS 3.0 to upgrade cable networks. However, for me, the natural upgrade is to go FTTH, which is much greener than DOCSIS 3.0, requires less OPEX and much less powering.
