Italian regulator proposes to create an open network operator

Corrado Calabro, chairman of the Agcom (Italian regulator) proposed yesterday the creation of a public-private operator to deploy and maintain the broadband infrastructure in Italy.

Mainly, what he is proposing is the creation of an open network operator to offer wholesale services to the different network operators to deploy new access infrastructures.

This is aligned with what UK did some years ago when privatized BT and is what the Spanish government should have done when privatising Telefonica.

It seems that now we are starting to realise that is has no sense to deploy to different highways one next to the other…
